Buza, Gifford Power Bishop Offense in Win at Wooster

Junior quarterback Kaden Buza (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) tossed a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes and sophomore running back Jackson Gifford (Ross/Hamilton Ross) ran for 3 second-half scores as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wooster in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday in Wooster.

The Bishops received the opening kickoff and assembled a leisurely 12-play, 58-yard drive, using more than 6 minutes, with Buza connecting with senior wide receiver Walker James (Hurricane, W. Va.) on a 4-yard scoring play to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead.

Late in the opening quarter, Buza connected with junior wide receiver Jakii Alston (Pickerington/Central) on a 62-yard scoring play and the conversion by junior kicker Gabriel Chlebowski (Toledo/St. John's) made it 14-0.

Wooster closed to within 14-7 when Troy Baughman found Brazos Gadler on a 56-yard pass play early in the third quarter, but the Bishops responded with a 5-play, 58-yard sprint that included a 15-yard Buza-to-Alston completion before Alston broke free on a 30-yard run, setting up a 12-yard Gifford touchdown run.

On the Scots' ensuing possession, senior cornerback Ian Riddle (Perrysburg) picked off a Mateo Renteria pass and returned it to the Wooster 7, with Gifford scoring on the next play for a 28-7 lead.  Gifford added a 1-yard touchdown plunge midway through the fourth quarter.

Buza completed 17 of 21 passes for 208 yards and 2 scores.  Freshman wide receiver Josh Hurst (Port Clinton) made 9 catches for 84 yards, and Alston finished with 3 catches for 84 yards and a TD.  Gifford ran for 97 yards and 3 touchdowns on 22 carries.  Sophomore linebacker Seth Anderson (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) had a team-high 6 tackles, while junior defensive end Marquel Henry (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) had 4 stops, including 3 sacks for a loss of 37 yards.
