Junior outside hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) and junior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) recorded double-digit efforts in kills to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wooster on Wednesday in Wooster.
The Bishops defeated the Fighting Scots by scores of 25-15, 25-15, 18-25, 25-16.
Ohio Wesleyan broke the first set open with a 7-2 run that included 2 kills from senior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) that helped the Bishops turn an 8-7 lead into a 15-9 margin. Freshman outside hitter Gracelyn Mathias (Apple Creek/Waynedale) contributed a kill, a block, and an ace down the stretch as Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the match.
The Bishops led, 9-8, in the second set before taking off on a 10-3 run that included 2 kills by Murray and 2 aces from Richardson, and Murray added an ace and a kill to help Ohio Wesleyan finish off the set and take a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Buravlov (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) had a kill that gave Ohio Wesleyan an 11-9 lead in the third set, but Wooster scored the next 9 points to take the lead for good. Troy Johnson had 2 blocks and a kill as the Scots took a 12-11 lead, and Hayley Nash reeled off 3 straight kills to finish the run, then came through with the set-ending kill to send the match to a fourth set.
Ohio Wesleyan struck quickly in the fourth set, turning a 5-3 lead into a 21-9 advantage as sophomore middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) collected 3 kills, sophomore middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) had a kill and a block, and Richardson added a kill and an ace.
Murray led the Bishops with 14 kills, while Peters finished with 10. Freshman setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) finished with team bests of 33 assists and 17 digs. Kutilek posted a team-high 4 blocks.
