Sophomore middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron), senior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood), and junior outside hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) led a balanced Ohio Wesleyan offense, but ninth-ranked Wittenberg swept the Bishops in a North Coast Athletic Conference match on Wednesday in Springfield.
The Tigers defeated the Bishops by scores of 25-16, 25-22, 25-16. The loss dropped Ohio Wesleyan's conference record to 4-2, keeping the Bishops in third place behind conference co-leaders Wittenberg and Denison, each with a 5-0 record.
Solberg delivered a kill that gave Ohio Wesleyan an 11-10 lead in the first set, but Katie Hiestand had 2 kills and a block as the Tigers took the lead with a 5-1 run, then pulled away with a 5-0 burst that included 3 straight service aces by Ava Hampton.
Ohio Wesleyan jumped to an 8-3 lead in the second set as junior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) contributed a pair of kills and sophomore middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) added a kill and a block. Wittenberg countered with a 10-3 spurt that included a kill and a block by Tyler Linkhart, only to see the Bishops come back to tie the score at 16 on a Murray kill. After another Murray kill brought Ohio Wesleyan within 19-18, the Tigers got aces by Hampton and Linkhart to get to set point before Kaili Worcester finished off the set with a kill.
Wittenberg broke open the third set with a 6-0 burst that turned a 10-8 lead into a 16-8 margin, with Hiestand recording back-to-back kills during that run, and the teams traded points during much of the remainder of the set.
Solberg, Richardson, and Murray each recorded 6 kills. Freshman setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) finished with 24 assists and shared the team lead with 10 digs and 2 blocks. Solberg also had 2 blocks and Peters also had 10 digs.
