Senior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) recorded a pair of double-digit performances in kills to lead Ohio Wesleyan during the second day of the Elmhurst University Invitational, hosted by Elmhurst University on Saturday in Elmhurst, Ill.
The Bishops opened the day against Wisconsin-River Falls, with the Falcons winning by scores of 20-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-22. Ohio Wesleyan then closed out the tournament against host Elmhurst and downed the Bluejays by scores of 25-9, 25-17, 25-23.
In the first set against Wisconsin-River Falls, Ohio Wesleyan broke a 12-12 tie with a 5-0 run that saw junior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) deliver an ace and Richardson and sophomore middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) team up for blocks on 2 consecutive points. Solberg came through with a pair of kills down the stretch to put the set away.
The Falcons broke a 5-5 tie with a 12-4 run in the second set, with Katie Koerper collecting kills on consecutive points. Ohio Wesleyan took a 16-7 lead in the third set on a block by sophomore right-side hitter Grace Cummings (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and sophomore middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), but UW-RF got 3 kills and a block from Sami Hilley on the way to tying the score at 18. With the Bishops serving for the set after a Peters kill, Koerper came through with a kill to keep the set going, and kills by Hilley and Kameri Meredith gave the set to the Falcons. A Richardson kill tied the fourth set at 14, but the Falcons took the lead with an 8-2 run that featured kills from Meredith and Koerper, then got 3 kills by Kate Seymour to help close out the set and the match.
Richardson led the Bishops with 12 kills. Sophomore setter Olivia Osuna (Orlando, Fla./Phillps) recorded 31 assists. Solberg, Kutilek, and Richardson finished with 3 blocks apiece. Junior defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had a team-high 16 digs.
Against Elmhurst, Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 5-1 lead and never looked back, with Solberg contributing a pair of kills during the opening run and adding 2 more kills, along with 3 from Peters, during a 9-0 burst that ended the set. The second set saw the Bishops pull away from a 13-10 lead with a 7-3 run that featured 3 Solberg kills. Elmhurst built a 6-2 lead in the third set as Jada Wiley had 3 straight kills, and the Bluejays still led, 11-7, when the Bishops went on an 11-1 stretch with Richardson collecting 2 kills and 2 aces and Peters adding 3 kills. The Bluejays closed to within 23-22 on a Payton Ceh kill and to 24-23 on a Kali Phillips kill, but Ohio Wesleyan got the final point to end the set and the match.
Richardson led the Bishops with 12 kills, while Peters and Solberg each contributed 11. Osuna finished with 36 assists. Solberg posted 4 blocks. Cummings had a team-best 9 digs.
