Volleyball Wraps up NCAC Slate with Sweep of Kenyon

Senior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood), junior outside hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), and sophomore middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) posted double-digit efforts in kills to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a win over Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The Bishops defeated the Owls by scores of 25-14, 25-12, 25-14.  With the win, Ohio Wesleyan closes out its NCAC schedule with a 5-2 record and will be the No. 3 seed in next week's NCAC tournament.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the match with a 9-0 run, with junior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) serving up a pair of aces and Richardson contributing 2 kills.  The Bishops kept their foot on the gas, extending the margin to 20-4 on a Murray kill.  The Owls closed to within 23-13 with the help of a kill and a block from Eras Yager, but sophomore middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Murray came through with kills to end the set.

Kenyon was within 7-5 after a Paige Milhon block in the second set, but the Bishops took off on a 9-1 run that included 3 kills from Murray and 2 more by Solberg.  Richardson chipped in 3 kills and an ace to help the Bishops take the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Bishops raced to a 10-1 lead in the third set as Solberg opened the set with consecutive kills and added another kill and an ace later in the run, and Richardson had a pair of kills as well.  The Owls closed to within 13-8 on a Jac Cousineau ace, but Ohio Wesleyan pushed the lead back into double digits with a 7-2 burst that included 2 Peters kills, and Richardson added 2 kills down the stretch.

Richardson led the Bishops with 14 kills, Murray added 12, and Solberg finished with 10 kills with no errors in 15 attempts for a .667 hitting percentage, tying for second place on the Bishop single-match list.  Sophomore setter Olivia Osuna (Orlando, Fla./Phillips) had a team-high 40 assists, Solberg recorded 2 blocks, and junior defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had a team-best 17 digs.
