Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Ryan (Beavercreek/Dayton Carroll) made a season-high 9 saves as Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin played to a scoreless tie in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday in Oberlin.
The Ohio Wesleyan tie, combined with Denison's win over Wooster, left the Bishops and Big Red tied for third place in the final NCAC standings. Ohio Wesleyan won the tiebreaker and will be the No. 3 seed in next week's NCAC tournament, facing second-seeded DePauw at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Greencastle, Ind., while fourth-seeded Denison will visit top-seeded Kenyon at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Gambier. The advancing teams will play for the NCAC tournament title on Saturday at the campus of the higher seed.
The first half was evenly played, with Oberlin holding a 5-4 edge in shots. Freshman midfielder Maya Burlingame (Canton/GlenOak) put a shot on goal in the seventh minute, but Oberlin keeper Benji was there for the save. Ryan stopped a shot by Oberlin's Heather Benway in the 12th minute.
Ryan denied shots by Benway in the 55th and 57th minutes, and turned away shots by Sofia Mitchell in the 62nd minute and Brynn Adams in the 68th minute. In the 73rd minute, Mitchell launched a long shot that hit the crossbar, and Yeowomen teammate Maya Blevins got to the rebound first, but Ryan made the save on Blevins' shot from point-blank range.
Oberlin outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 19-7. Ryan's 9 saves established a season best.
