Bishop Basketball Bounces Bengals in Season Opener

Senior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) scored a pair of hoops and senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) and junior wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) knocked down 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan pulled away for a win over Buffalo State on the first day of the JCU Tip-Off Classic, hosted by John Carroll University on Saturday in University Heights.

In Saturday's other contest, John Carroll defeated Wittenberg, 94-72.  Ohio Wesleyan will face John Carroll during the tournament's second day at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The Bishops opened the game with a 7-0 burst that included a Clement 3-pointer and a pair of hoops from sophomore wing David Rice (Brook Park/Parma Padua Franciscan), but the Bengals came back to take a 17-15 lead on a pair of Robert Richards free throws midway through the half.  After retaking the lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), Ohio Wesleyan would lead for the remainder of the half and take a 39-30 lead into the locker room.

Buffalo State got a 3-point play from Tyron Smith to pull within 47-37 early in the second half, but Ohio Wesleyan pulled away with the help of a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws from White and buckets by Clement and freshman guard Isaac Ward (Circleville/Logan Elm) before Carter closed out the 15-4 run with a 3-pointer that made it a 62-41 game with 12:09 left in regulation time, and the Bishop lead would remain in double digits throughout the remainder of the game.

Clement led the Bishops with 26 points, Hinkle finished with 14 points and a team-high 4 assists, and White scored 10 points.  Rice grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds.
