Senior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) sank a pair of free throws to give Ohio Wesleyan a 3-point advantage, but John Carroll took the lead with a 15-2 run and went on to a win during the second day of the JCU Tip-Off Classic, hosted by John Carroll University on Sunday in University Heights.
In Sunday's other contest, Wittenberg defeated Buffalo State, 75-68.
The Bishops took an early lead on a 3-pointer by senior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine), but the Blue Streaks got a basket and a pair of free throws from Luke Frazier and a bucket by Luke Chicone on the way to a 10-5 lead.
Clement, senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.), and freshman guard Isaac Ward (Circleville/Logan Elm) contributed hoops as Ohio Wesleyan retook the lead at 19-16, and after Spicer's free throws, Ohio Wesleyan led by a 21-18 count.
Jerry Higgins III hit a pair of 3-pointers and Will Yontek added another during the 15-2 Blue Streak run, which ended with Yontek's trifecta and John Carroll ahead, 33-23.
Ohio Wesleyan was still within 44-35 after junior wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) drilled a 3-pointer with 14:09 left in regulation time, but the hosts scored the next 5 points for a 49-35 lead, and the margin would remain in double figures for the rest of the contest.
Clement led the Bishops with 22 points, while Spicer and Carter finished with 10 apiece. Spicer had a team-high 8 rebounds.
Clement represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team. He was joined by Argjend Imeri of Buffalo State, Jerry Saunders Jr. of Wittenberg, and Will Yontek and Higgins of John Carroll, with Higgins receiving Most Valuable Player recognition.
