Ohio Wesleyan 73, Albion 67

Senior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) scored 3 points during a late 5-0 burst that helped Ohio Wesleyan hold off Albion for a non-conference win on Saturday in Albion, Mich.

Albion had closed to within 68-65 on a jumper by Chanse Crittendon with 2:46 left in regulation time.

With 1:34 remaining, Spicer grabbed an offensive rebound, drew a foul, and drained a free throw to make it a 2-possession game, then on the Bishops' next trip down the floor, Spicer sank a lay-in to make it a 71-65 margin with :51 remaining.

Senior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) added a pair of free throws with :23 left to stretch the lead to 73-65.

Albion got a lay-in from Fred Garland with :08 left, ending a stretch of 2:34 in which the Bishop defense held the Britons scoreless, but the hosts would get no closer.

Spicer knocked down a 3-pointer at the 11:40 mark of the first half to give Ohio Wesleyan its biggest lead of the period at 15-9, and the Bishops still led by 6 after a hoop by senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) midway through the half made it 17-11.

The Britons rallied with a 14-4 run that included a pair of jumpers by Jonathan Armstead-Wilkerson and a 3-pointer from Khy Winston to go up, 25-21, only to see the Bishops catch fire from downtown, with Clement hitting back-to-back trifectas and junior wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name), and sophomore guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) also connecting from long range to fuel a 12-3 spree.

Another Clement 3-pointer with 4:29 left in regulation time gave Ohio Wesleyan a 65-59 lead, equaling the Bishops' largest advantage of the game, but Albion closed the gap with a pair of Ken Thomas free throws and a bucket by Garland to head into the closing minutes.

Clement led the Bishops with 22 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.  Carter added 14 points, White scored 13, Hinkle finished with 11, and Spicer wound up with 10 points.  Hinkle and sophomore wing David Rice (Brook Park/Parma Padua Franciscan) shared the team lead with 4 assists apiece.
