Heidelberg 72, Ohio Wesleyan 70
Senior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) scored 21 first-half points, and junior wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) and sophomore guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) hit 3-pointers during a 10-0 run that opened up a 15-point second-half Ohio Wesleyan lead, but Heidelberg rallied for a non-conference win over the Bishops on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Clement hit a trio of 3-pointers during the early going and added a lay-in at the 5-minute mark as the Bishops opened up an 18-8 lead. Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 13 points during the first half, that on a 3-pointer by senior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East), and another Clement 3-pointer put the Bishops up, 41-30, in the final minute of the half before the Student Princes got lay-ins from Jashun Cobb and Zane Leitwein to pull within 7 at the break.
The Bishops led, 47-42, early in the second half when lay-ins by Spicer and sophomore wing David Rice (Brook Park/Parma Padua Franciscan), along with the 3-pointers from Carter and Hinkle, pushed the lead to 57-42 with 15:28 remaining in regulation time.
Heidelberg went on a 14-4 run that included 3-pointers from Leitwein and Jacob Logsdon, along with a pair of hoops by Isaiah Young, to pull within 61-56 with 11:33 to play.
Clement answered with a pair of lay-ins less than 30 seconds apart to extend the margin to 65-56, freshman guard Isaac Ward (Circleville/Logan Elm) sank a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 9 points at 67-58 with 8:23 to go, and Hinkle split a pair of free throws for a 68-60 lead at the 6:25 mark.
The Student Princes made it a one-possession game as Emmanuel Perdue collected a lay-in and a pair of free throws before Young stole the ball and scored to make it 68-66 with 3:22 to go.
Clement sank the second of 2 free throws with 2:17 left, but Young hit a lay-in at the other end to pull the visitors within 69-68 at the 2:06 mark.
Clement hit the first of 2 free throws for a 70-68 Bishop lead with 1:33 to play, but Perdue hit a jumper to even the score at 70 with 1:12 remaining in regulation time.
Perdue drew a foul with :20 left and sank both free throws to give Heidelberg the lead.
The Bishops had a look at the game-winner, but a 3-pointer by senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) was off the mark.
Clement led Ohio Wesleyan with 29 points. Hinkle added 11 points. Spicer grabbed a team-leading 7 rebounds, and Hinkle and Spicer shared the team lead with 4 assists each.
