Ohio Wesleyan 52, Wittenberg 42

Senior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) hit back-to-back buckets to help thwart a Wittenberg comeback and senior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) passed a career milestone as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wittenberg in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Wittenberg had closed to within 44-39 on a putback by Levi Boettcher with 3:04 remaining in regulation time, but Spicer hit a lay-in on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and after Boettcher split a pair of free throws at the 2:11 mark, Spicer knocked down a jumper from the lane for a 48-40 Bishop lead with 1:42 to go.

Clement stole the ball and sank a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 50-40 with 1:14 left, then threw down a dunk with :15 remaining to put an exclamation point on the win.

The Bishops never trailed during the first half, building a 20-12 lead on a Spicer 3-pointer with 7:48 left, but the Tigers clawed back to tie the score at 20 as Jeff Queen hit a pair of free throws and a pair of baskets.

Wittenberg took its only lead of the game when Trey Killens opened the second half with a pair of free throws and a fast-break lay-in that gave the visitors a 24-23 lead, but Clement answered with a jumper from the lane to put the Bishops ahead to stay, and Ohio Wesleyan extended the lead to 36-28 on a Clement 3-pointer and a lay-in by senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.).  The Tigers would narrow the gap to 5 points on multiple occasions, the last on Boettcher's bucket at the 3:04 mark, but would not come closer than that.

Clement led the Bishops with 25 points.  The 25 points raised his career total to 1017 points, making him the 33rd Ohio Wesleyan men's basketball player to surpass the 1000-point mark.

Spicer finished with 12 points and grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds, and sophomore guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and White shared the team lead with 3 assists apiece.
