Ohio Wesleyan 99, Alma 91
Senior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) sparked a last-minute comeback that sent the game into overtime, and sophomore wing David Rice (Brook Park/Parma Padua Franciscan) and sophomore guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) combined for 9 points in the extra session as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Alma during the second day of the Wittenberg Holiday Classic, hosted by Wittenberg University on Tuesday in Springfield.
Alma had taken an 82-77 lead on a jumper by Tyshaun Walker with :46 left in regulation time, and Peyton Bush snared a defensive rebound and was fouled after the Bishops misfired on a pair of 3-point shots on their ensuing possession. Bush hit the first free throw but missed the second, leaving the Fighting Scots up, 83-77, with :23 to go.
Clement scored on the other end to make it a 4-point game, then senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) stole the ball and senior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) scored from the lane to bring the Bishops within 83-81 with :08 left.
Alma's Connor Riley was fouled with :05 left, and he sank the first free throw but missed the second to leave the door open for the Bishops, and Ohio Wesleyan took advantage of the opening when Clement was fouled on a 3-point attempt and sank all 3 free throws at the :02 mark to even the score at 84. Riley's 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark, and the game headed into overtime.
Spicer opened the overtime scoring with a lay-in, and Rice followed with a free throw before Hinkle and then Rice sank a pair from the line to give the Bishops a 91-84 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan still led, 93-86, after a lay-in by junior wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name), but the Fighting Scots rallied behind a jumper from Colton Meister and a 3-pointer by Gabe Bordeau.
Rice countered with a lay-in for Ohio Wesleyan, and the Bishops put the game away at the free throw line, with first Clement and then Hinkle draining a pair to account for the 99-91 final.
Clement led the Bishops with 21 points and 5 assists. Rice recorded a double-double for the second consecutive outing, finishing with 16 points and a career-high 13 boards. Spicer also finished with a double-double, collecting 18 points and 11 rebounds. Hinkle added 14 points and Carter contributed 12.
