Wittenberg 71, Ohio Wesleyan 67
Junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) hit a jumper from the lane that tied the game at 41, but Wittenberg scored the next 5 points and held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday in Springfield.
Clement's jumper capped a 9-3 run that wiped out a 38-32 deficit, with freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) providing the first 7 points of that scoring spree.
Wittenberg's Landon Martin converted a 3-point play to give the Tigers the lead, then followed with a jumper for a 46-41 margin midway through the second half. The hosts would lead by as many as 9 points, that on a 3-pointer by Rashaad Ali-Shakir that made it 52-43 with 8:40 left in regulation time.
Ohio Wesleyan reeled off the next 8 points, getting 3-pointers from Clement and senior wing Zane Ries (Barberton) and a lay-in by senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) along the way, to pull within 52-51, and the Bishops were still within 67-65 after Clement sank a pair of free throws with :58 remaining.
The Bishops forced a shot-clock violation on Wittenberg's ensuing possession and got the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead, but Brice Hill blocked a shot by Clement, and Martin was fouled on the rebound and sank both free throws for a 69-65 lead with :16 left.
Junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) scored on a putback to once again make it 2-point game, but Martin sealed the verdict with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken an early 7-2 lead as Clement sank a jumper and a 3-pointer, but a 10-2 run gave the lead back to the hosts, and Wittenberg would lead for the final 9-plus minutes of the first half, taking a 31-27 lead at the break.
Clement led the Bishops with 23 points. Hinkle added 18 points, Carlson scored 11 points, and Spicer had 10 points and a team-high 9 boards.
