Senior wing Zane Ries (Barberton) knocked down a pair of 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan narrowed a 17-point second-half deficit to just 6 points, but sixth-seeded DePauw held on for an upset of the third-seeded Bishops in a quarterfinal contest of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) converted a 3-point play to bring the Bishops within 54-45 with 14:25 left in regulation time, but the Tigers got a 3-pointer by Elijah Hales and 2 trifectas from R.J. Powell on the way to a 68-52 advantage, then took a 74-57 lead on a pair of Hales free throws with 6:50 remaining.
Ries connected from downtown on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, and baskets by Spicer and junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) pared the deficit to 10.
Nick Wissel hit a timely 3-pointer for the visitors to stretch the lead to 77-64 with 2:30 left, but the Bishops rallied with another Ries 3-pointer and buckets by Clement and Spicer to make it a 77-71 game with 1:29 left.
DePauw's Nolan Niego drove for a lay-in to push the lead back to 8, and Grant Niego added a pair of free throws for the 81-71 final.
The Tigers had taken an early 8-4 lead as Hales and Grant Niego hit 3-pointers, but the Bishops reeled off 10 straight points, with freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) contributing a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer and senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) adding a lay-in and a 3-pointer. DePauw answered with 3-pointers from Wissel and Nolan Niego to tie the game at 14, and the visitors would score the final 7 points of the half on a James Havrilla 3-pointer and a pair of Grant Niego hoops to take a 43-38 lead at the intermission.
A Grant Gohmann lay-in and a Hales 3-pointer extended the margin to 54-42 with 16:07 left, leading to Spicer's 3-point play.
Spicer and Clement had 15 points apiece for the Bishops, with Spicer collecting a team-high 6 assists. Carlson scored 12 points and led Ohio Wesleyan with 10 rebounds, and Hinkle added 10 points.
Hales scored 27 points for DePauw.
