Wooster 74, Ohio Wesleyan 69

Junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) and junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) hit 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan took an early lead, but Wooster built a double-digit lead and withstood a late Bishop comeback to hold on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday in Wooster.

Ohio Wesleyan took an early 6-4 lead as Spicer and Clement hit from long range.

After a jumper by freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) put the Bishops up by a 10-8 count, Wooster went on a 16-3 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by Elijah Meredith and additional trifectas from Jamir Billings and Hamilton Johnson.  Johnson's 3-pointer gave the hosts a 24-13 lead with 12:25 left in the first half.

Freshman wing David Rice (Brook Park/Parma Padua Franciscan) connected from downtown to end that Scot run, but Wooster would score the next 11 points of the game, getting a Billings 3-pointer and 3 hoops from Turner Kurt to take a 35-16 lead midway through the period.

The Bishops whittled the margin to 10 points on a handful of hoops from Clement and a Hinkle 3-pointer, and the Fighting Scots still led, 69-55, after a Billings jumper with 4:59 left in regulation time.

Ohio Wesleyan then scored 9 straight points, with senior wing Zane Ries (Barberton) scoring on the break, Rice hitting a jumper from the lane, Hinkle knocking down a 3-pointer, and Clement scoring on the break to make it a 69-64 game with 1:06 left in regulation time.

Meredith converted a 3-point play with :50 left to end Wooster's scoring drought of more than 4 minutes, and Najee Hardaway sank a pair of free throws with :28 remaining to give the Scots a 74-66 lead.

Hinkle led the Bishops with 19 points, while Clement finished with 18.  Both had 3 assists to share the team lead.  Rice contributed 10 points and Spicer grabbed a team-high 10 boards.

Meredith scored 19 points for Wooster.
