Ohio Wesleyan 1, Kalamazoo 1

Sophomore forward Avery Maxeiner (Sunbury/Big Walnut) gave Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, and freshman goalkeeper Natalie Ryan (Beavercreek/Dayton Carroll) stopped a penalty kick as the Bishops played to a deadlock with Kalamazoo in the season opener for both teams on Thursday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the 11th minute after earning a corner kick.  Freshman midfielder Tiffany Trinh (Dublin/Scioto) sent the ball into the penalty area, and after it rattled around a bit, Maxeiner knocked it home from point-blank range for a 1-0 Bishop advantage.

The Hornets got the equalizer just under a minute later when Cassidy Short picked up the ball after a failed clear in the Ohio Wesleyan end and sent a shot over Ryan for the score.

In the 16th minute, Kalamazoo was awarded a penalty kick, but Ryan stopped Sophia Timm-Blow's drive to preserve the tie.

Freshman midfielder Maya Burlingame (Canton/GlenOak) had a shot hit the crossbar early in the second half, and Maxeiner had a look in the closing seconds but sent the shot wide.

Kalamazoo outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 15-13.  Ryan finished with 8 saves for the Bishops.
