Sophomore forward Avery Maxeiner (Sunbury/Big Walnut) gave Ohio Wesleyan an early lead, and freshman goalkeeper Natalie Ryan (Beavercreek/Dayton Carroll) stopped a penalty kick as the Bishops played to a deadlock with Kalamazoo in the season opener for both teams on Thursday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead in the 11th minute after earning a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Tiffany Trinh (Dublin/Scioto) sent the ball into the penalty area, and after it rattled around a bit, Maxeiner knocked it home from point-blank range for a 1-0 Bishop advantage.
The Hornets got the equalizer just under a minute later when Cassidy Short picked up the ball after a failed clear in the Ohio Wesleyan end and sent a shot over Ryan for the score.
In the 16th minute, Kalamazoo was awarded a penalty kick, but Ryan stopped Sophia Timm-Blow's drive to preserve the tie.
Freshman midfielder Maya Burlingame (Canton/GlenOak) had a shot hit the crossbar early in the second half, and Maxeiner had a look in the closing seconds but sent the shot wide.
Kalamazoo outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 15-13. Ryan finished with 8 saves for the Bishops.
