Ninth-Ranked Calvin Rallies Past Men's Soccer

Sophomore forward Franklin Rodriguez (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire (Mass.)) staked 21st-ranked Ohio Wesleyan to a first-half lead, but ninth-ranked Calvin rallied for a pair of second-half goals to win the adidas® Invitational on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

In Saturday's first game, Hanover and Hope played to a scoreless tie.

Ohio Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead late in the first half after a restart in the Calvin end.  Sophomore midfielder Drew Doza (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) sent the ball into the penalty area, freshman forward Aiden Wightman (Beavercreek) played it back toward the top of the box, and Rodriguez ripped a shot across the goal and in with 7:30 remaining in the period.

Calvin got the equalizer in the 77th minute when Jona Meyer-Crothers made a run up the left side and centered to Chris Schau, who finished the chance in front with 13:57 left in regulation time.

Shortly thereafter, the Bishops were not able to complete a clear, and Schau got to the ball and put it into the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winner.

"Except for a 2-minute period, we played really, really well," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "We used 21 players, a lot of new guys, and we played well except for that 2-minute span."

Ohio Wesleyan and Calvin each fired 12 shots.  Junior Mason Taylor (Marysville) recorded 6 saves for the Bishops.

Sophomore back Justin Carro (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills), senior midfielder Cristian Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) and senior back Ethan Marshall (Bexley/Columbus St. Charles) represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team.
