Junior outside hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), sophomore middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron), and junior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) turned in timely plays for Ohio Wesleyan as the Bishops defeated Anderson in the annual Bishop Invitational on Friday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Bishops defeated the Ravens by scores of 26-24, 25-23, 25-17. In Friday's opener, Trine defeated Bethany by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 25-13.
Ohio Wesleyan reeled off 3 straight points, including a Peters kill and an ace from sophomore right-side hitter Grace Cummings (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) to break a 9-9 tie in the first set, but Anderson pulled even at 21 on a Jimena Montano kill. With the score knotted at 23, Anderson scored on an attack error and was serving for the set, but the Bishops evened the score on a service error and rang up back-to-back kills by Murray and Solberg to take the lead in the match.
In the second set, it was Anderson that built a lead, getting kills from Olivia Ricica and Tess Purdue to break a 17-17 tie and take a 21-17 lead. Ohio Wesleyan rallied to tie the set at 22 with the help of kills from sophomore middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), senior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood), and Peters, and with the score tied at 23, it was Peters who delivered a kill and teamed up with Solberg on a set-ending block.
Murray, Solberg, and Peters had kills during a 5-0 burst that extended a 14-11 lead into a 19-11 margin in the third set, and Ohio Wesleyan closed out the set and the match on a kill from Kutilek.
Solberg led the Bishops with 9 kills and shared the team lead with 3 blocks. Peters and Richardson had 8 kills apiece, with Peters collecting a team-best 15 digs sharing the team lead with 3 blocks, and Kutilek and Murray each added 7 kills. Freshman setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) had 34 assists and shared the team lead with 3 blocks.
