Volleyball Splits at Mount St. Joseph

Junior outside hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) and junior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) each turned in a pair of double-digit performances in kills for Ohio Wesleyan as the Bishops split a pair of matches during the first day of the Charlie Wrublewski Invitational, hosted by Mount St. Joseph University on Friday in Cincinnati.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the evening with a 25-21, 23-25, 25-8, 25-15 win over Wilmington.  The Bishops then lost to Mount St. Joseph by scores of 27-25, 27-29, 25-22, 25-15.

Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Buravlov (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) had a pair of kills during a 4-0 burst that put the Bishops ahead to stay in the first set against Wilmington, but the Quakers evened the match with a win in the second set despite the Bishops closing to within 24-23 on a Peters kill after trailing, 23-19.  In the thrid set, Ohio Wesleyan broke a 4-4 tie with a 13-0 run, getting 3 kills from senior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) and a pair of aces from sophomore middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron).  The Bishops raced to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set as Peters had a pair of kills and went on to take the set and the match.

Murray finished with 15 kills and Peters added 13 more.  Freshman setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) collected 33 assists.  Solberg chalked up 5 blocks and junior defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had 16 digs.

In the first set against MSJ, Peters came through with a kill for a 25-24 Bishop lead, but the Lions got the next 3 points to take the set as Addie Conley came through with a pair of kills.  Ohio Wesleyan evened the match by taking the second set, getting kills from junior middle blocker Mila Noel (Delray Beach, Fla./St. John Paul II Academy) and Peters to break a 27-27 tie, but the Lions answered with a late rally in the third set, with Chloe Warburton contributing a kill and an assist down the stretch as MSJ scored 3 of the final 4 points.   The Lions pulled away with a 6-0 run in the fourth set, with Brooke Aselage contributing back-to-back kills, and went on to win the set and the match.

Peters had 13 kills for Ohio Wesleyan, while Murray and Richardson finished with 12 apiece.  Bechina dished out 42 assists.  Solberg recorded 4 blocks and White finished with 15 digs.
