Freshman midfielder Athena Kolettis (Northfield/Nordonia) scored in the final 5 minutes of the first half of play to put the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops up against Trine, which ultimately led to a 2-0 win on Tuesday night at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Ohio Wesleyan dominated the first half offensively, getting 16 shots. The defense held it down, allowing Trine only 3 shots during the entire half, with sophomore midfielder Ryan O'Neill (Cincinnati/Maineville Little Miami) making it hard for the Thunder to get past the midfield.
The Bishops took the lead in the 40th minute when freshman midfielder Emma Weber (Cincinnati/Walnut Hills) tried to make a run into the Trine penalty area but ran into a trio of Thunder defenders. Weber was stopped, but the ball continued into the box, and Kolettis ran up from behind and got off a quick shot that found the back of the net.
Trine's goalkeeper, Sophie Aschemier, kept the score from running up with 9 saves for the match. Teresa Ashbrook for the opposing side took 5 shots, creating a few close chances that made freshman goalkeeper Natalie Ryan (Beavercreek/Dayton Carroll) come off her line to keep them from scoring.
Freshman midfielder Tiffany Trinh (Dublin/Scioto) scored her first for the Bishops off a corner with 5:17 remaining to give the Bishops a 2-0 lead and help secure them the win.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Trine, 26-16. Ryan finished with 5 saves in goal, with one incredible team save off the line helping to earn the shutout.
