Ohio Wesleyan 41, Kenyon 14
Junior quarterback Kaden Buza (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) threw 3 touchdown passes and ran for another score to help Ohio Wesleyan build a 34-0 halftime lead, and the Bishops went on to a win over Kenyon in their North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday in Gambier.
After taking the opening kickoff and driving to a first down at the Kenyon 9, the Bishops got on the scoreboard with a 29-yard field goal from junior kicker Gabriel Chlebowski (Toledo/St. John's).
Sophomore safety Drew Thornton (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) picked off a Ryan O'Leary pass and returned it to the Kenyon 36 on the ensuing series, and Buza connected with sophomore running back Jackson Gifford (Ross/Hamilton Ross) on a 12-yard scoring play to make it a 10-0 game. Buza followed with an 8-yard scoring run later in the quarter for a 17-0 Bishop lead.
In the second quarter, Buza found senior wide receiver Caden Calhoun (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe) on a 23-yard scoring play and tossed a 27-yard pass to senior wide receiver Walker James (Hurricane, W. Va.) on the way to a 34-0 lead at the break.
Kenyon assembled a 10-yard, 70-play drive to open the second half, with Jordon Benjamin going over from 4 yards out, but Ohio Wesleyan got the score back as freshman wide receiver Josh Hurst (Port Clinton) scored on a 74-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Zack Leonard (Niles/McKinley).
Buza completed 6 of 14 passes for 108 yards and 3 scores. Hurst had 2 catches for 88 yards and a TD, and Gifford caught 2 passes for 35 yards and a score. Buza led the Bishops with 60 yards on 9 rushes. Senior cornerback Ian Riddle (Perrysburg), senior linebacker Ethan Brooker (Waverly), and Thornton shared the team lead with 7 tackles apiece.
