Senior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) and junior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) recorded double-digit efforts in kills to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a win over Hiram in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Bishops defeated the Terriers by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-13.
Ohio Wesleyan broke a 6-6 tie in the first set with a run that included 3 kills and a block from sophomore middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and opened up a 14-8 lead after 3 straight aces by junior defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) before Richardson took over, delivering 6 kills down the stretch.
The Bishops led, 7-6, in the second set when Richardson collected 3 kills and junior middle blocker Mila Noel (Delray Beach, Fla./St. John Paul II Academy) added 2 kills and a block on the way to a 15-9 lead, and Richardson again took over down the stretch, collecting 3 kills before Kutilek's set-ending kill.
Ohio Wesleyan reeled off 8 straight points to break an 8-8 tie in the third set, with Peters contributing 3 kills during that run.
Richardson led the Bishops with 17 kills, while Peters added 10. Freshman setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) finished with 37 assists. Sophomore middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) and Noel shared the team lead with 3 blocks apiece.
