Senior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) and senior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) scored back-to-back buckets that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead by a dozen, and the Bishops withstood a furious Hiram comeback to hold on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Hiram.

Clement knocked down a jumper and Spicer followed with a lay-in to give the Bishops a 75-63 lead with 1:28 left in regulation time.

Trent Jakacki answered with a 3-pointer for the Terriers, then stole the ball and scored to bring the hosts within 75-68 with just over a minute to play.  Brodgie Gordon then stole the ball and scored for Hiram, and after senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) split a pair of free throws with :43 left, Gordon connected on a 3-pointer that made it 76-73.

Clement was fouled with :37 remaining and sank both free throws to give the Bishops a 5-point cushion, but Kevin Beans Jr. drilled a 3-pointer with :28 left to bring Hiram within 78-76.

Spicer drove for a lay-in and junior wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) followed with a pair of free throws to stretch the Bishop lead to 82-76, allowing Ohio Wesleyan to withstand another Gordon 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

Spicer's lay-in 17 seconds into the game gave the Bishops a 2-1 lead, and Ohio Wesleyan would not trail again during the game.  The Bishops led by 10 on Clement's lay-in with 5:13 remaining in the first half and took a 37-33 lead at the break, then opened up a 46-38 lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) before Hiram rallied to tie the game at 50 on a 3-pointer from Doug Sartain.

Another Hinkle 3-pointer broke a 52-52 tie and put the Bishops ahead to stay, and Ohio Wesleyan would gradually build the lead to 10 and then 12 points, setting up the thrilling conclusion.

Hinkle led the Bishops with 25 points.  Spicer scored 16 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists, Clement finished with 15 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists, White added 12 points, and Carter snared a career-high 14 rebounds.
