Volleyball Splits with Bluffton, 16th-Ranked Transylvania

Senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and freshman outside hitter Natalie Dieball (Cincinnati/Lakota East) led the Ohio Wesleyan offense in a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday in Bluffton, Ohio.

The Bishops opened the day against Transylvania, with the 16th-ranked Pioneers taking a 22-25, 25-14, 25-6, 25-14 decision.  Ohio Wesleyan then swept Bluffton by scores of 25-13, 25-22, 25-19.

Dieball led the Bishops with 10 kills against Transylvania, with senior right-side hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) adding 9 kills and junior right-side hitter Grace Cummings (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) contributing 7.  Sophomore setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) had 16 assists and junior setter Olivia Osuna (Orlando, Fla./Phillips) added 15.  Senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) recorded 3 blocks and Bechina and Peters collected 12 digs apiece.

In the first set against Bluffton, the Bishops pulled away from a 12-10 lead with 7 straight points that included 2 Bechina aces and a kill by Dieball before Peters notched back-to-back kills to kick off a set-ending 4-0 run.  Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 21-20, in the second set before taking the lead on a Peters kill and a Murray ace, and with the score even at 22, Peters delivered a kill to put the Bishops ahead to stay before a Solberg block and a Dieball kill finished off the set.  The Beavers had taken a 14-12 lead in the third set on a kill by Leah Steinke, but the Bishops scored the next 5 points, getting 2 kills from Murray and another by Peters, and Murray added 2 kills and a block down the stretch as Ohio Wesleyan completed the sweep.

Peters led the Bishops with 13 kills, while Murray and Dieball finished with 9 apiece.  Bechina dished out 33 assists, Solberg had 3 blocks, and freshman defensive specialist Avery Krause (Cleveland/Holy Name) had a team-high 9 digs.
