Ohio Wesleyan 4, DePauw 2
Sophomore forward Christopher Guerra (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) scored twice in a span of 29 seconds as Ohio Wesleyan wiped out a 1-0 deficit and went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw on Tuesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
With the win, Ohio Wesleyan clinches the No. 2 seed and a home game in the semifinals of next week's NCAC tournament. Kenyon has clinched the No. 1 seed, and Denison, Wooster, DePauw, and Wittenberg are vying for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, which will be determined on Saturday.
DePauw took an early lead after earning a corner kick. A.J. Hockstok sent the ball into the penalty area, Ethan Webster headed the ball toward the right post, and Lalo Castellanos headed it home at the 8:28 mark.
Guerra evened the score in the 19th minute. After a turnover in the DePauw end, Guerra picked up the loose ball at the top of the penalty area and faked a Tiger defender, then slipped a shot between the defender and the goalkeeper with 26:05 left in the opening half.
Shortly thereafter, junior back Brady West (Dublin/Columbus St. Charles) sent a long pass up the middle, freeing senior forward Jaggar Brooker (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) on a run toward the Tiger goal. Brooker centered to Guerra, who took a touch and then put a shot into the DePauw goal just 29 seconds after the previous score.
Guerra set up the Bishops' third goal, passing to junior forward Franklin Rodriguez (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire (Mass.)), who finished the chance in the 27th minute.
The teams traded penalty kicks during the second half, with junior midfielder Landon Kuhn (Lewis Center/Olentangy Berlin) connecting in the 72nd minute and Sam Thiel scoring for DePauw in the 78th minute.
"We've had two good games in a row now, come-from-behind victories and 4 goals scored in both," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "I thought Christopher (Guerra) and Jaggar (Brooker) played pretty well. Now we have Denison to close out the regular season, and we'll see what happens. The guys have gotten better this year, and hopefully we can keep it going."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot DePauw, 25-7. Senior goalkeeper Mason Taylor (Marysville) made 2 saves in the Bishop goal.
