Ohio Wesleyan 50, Oberlin 7
Sophomore running back Devon Haley (Granville) and sophomore wide receiver J.T. James (Hurricane, W.Va.) scored 2 touchdowns apiece and junior strong safety Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) set a school record as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Oberlin in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday in Oberlin.
Haley went over from 3 yards out to finish off a 9-play, 60-yard drive at the the 4:13 mark of the first quarter. Haley had started the march with a 31-yard reception from senior quarterback Kaden Buza (Winchester, Va./Millbrook).
After forcing an Oberlin punt, the Bishops took over on the Yeomen 35-yard line and found the end zone in 4 plays, with Buza finding James for a 4-yard gain before connecting again on a 19-yard scoring play during the final minute of hte opening quarter. Freshman kicker Sean Putt (Mansfield/Senior) connected on the point-after kick to make it a 14-0 game.
Buza and James connected again to cap Ohio Wesleyan's following possession, this time on a 4-yard touchdown play that closed out a 7-play, 51-yard scoring drive.
Oberlin threatened on its next drive, picking up a first down at the Bishop 14-yard line, but Stoner jumped in front of a Drew Nye pass at the goal line and returned the ball the length of the field for a touchdown. The 100-yard interception return is the longest in school history, surpassing the 96-yard interception return by Leonard Gleaves at Kenyon on Oct. 30, 2010.
Later in the quarter, the Bishops marched to a first down on the Oberlin 2-yard line, but on fourth-and-goal from the 1, an apparent touchdown pass from Buza to James was wiped out as James had stepped on the end line, with the ball going to Oberlin on downs. On the first play from scrimmage, freshman defensive end Jack Novak (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) wrapped up running back NuNu Samuels in the end zone for a safety and a 30-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
On the opening possession of the second half, Stoner blocked an Oberlin punt and recovered the ball at the Yeomen 24, setting up a 12-yard touchdown run by Haley.
The Yeomen got on the scoreboard with a 3-yard pass from Jack Diskin to Ben Ephraim for a 3-yard touchdown play later in the period.
Freshman running back Tim Davis (Brookville) scored on a 2-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, and freshman free safety Chris Burns (Grove City) returned an interception 27 yards for a score on the final play of the game.
Buza completed 13 of 19 throws for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns. James had 4 receptions for 35 yards and 2 scores. Haley led the Bishops with 53 yards on 13 carries. Sophomore linebacker Colton Yarbrough (Port Clinton) and junior linebacker Seth Anderson (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) had 6 tackles apiece for Ohio Wesleyan, with Yarbrough adding 2 tackles for loss and Anderson a pass breakup.
