Ohio Wesleyan 2, Oberlin 0
Junior forward Franklin Rodriguez (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire (Mass.)) scored one goal and set up another to start Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
The Bishops jumped in front in the eighth minute. Sophomore back Gabe O'Reilly (Westerville/Columbus St. Charles) blocked an Oberlin clear attempt and Rodriguez ran down the carom, made a run into the box, cut back past a defender and put the ball into the right side of the goal.
Meanwhile, the Ohio Wesleyan defense held the Yeomen without a shot until the 43rd minute, when Nathan Thompson got a look at the Bishop goal, but the shot was stopped by senior goalkeeper Mason Taylor (Marysville).
Ohio Wesleyan had a chance to increase the lead when the Yeomen were called for a foul inside the penalty area in the 63rd minute. Senior forward Jaggar Brooker (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) went to the spot for the penalty kick, but his drive hit the post and play continued.
The Bishops had another chance at a penalty kick in the 76th minute, but sophomore forward Christopher Guerra (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) saw Oberlin keeper Colvin Iorio guess correctly and make the save.
Ohio Wesleyan made it 2-0 in the 79th minute. Guerra slotted a pass ahead to sophomore forward Rowan Kriebel (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), who made a run up the left side. Kriebel played the ball across to Rodriguez, who played it back to Guerra, whose shot found the net.
"This was a good conference win," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "I always think it's hard to play on Homecoming, because there are so many distractions. Gabe (O'Reilly), Brady (West), and Charlie (Riddle) played well, and Jaggar (Brooker) showed his speed tonight. We're moving forward in the conference and it's on to Hiram (on Tuesday)."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 28-2. Taylor made 1 save in recording the shutout.
