Senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and freshman outside hitter Natalie Dieball (Cincinnati/Lakota East) powered the Ohio Wesleyan offense to lead the Bishops over Kenyon in a North Coast Athletic Conference match on Saturday in Gambier.
The Bishops defeated the Owls by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 to remain unbeaten in the NCAC at 3-0.
With the score tied at 17 in the first set, the Bishops took charge with 4 straight points that included kills by junior right-side hitter Grace Cummings (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and Peters, along with a block by junior middle blocker Rachel Peters (Copley) and senior right-side hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), then finished off the set with another 4-0 run that featured a Dieball kill and a block by Murray and Rachel Peters. The second set saw the Bishops take the lead for good on a Cummins kill, then pull away from a 19-17 lead with a block from senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) and Murray, along with an ace by junior setter Olivia Osuna (Orlando, Fla./Phillips) before a Kaitlyn Peters kill closed out the set. Kenyon built a 3-point lead on several occasions in the third set, the lat at 20-17 on a Lindsey Abramson kill, before Ohio Wesleyan stormed back with a 5-0 run that included kills by Dieball and Murray and an ace by Kaitlyn Peters. With the score tied at 23, a Solberg kill and an Owl attack error ended the set and the match.
Kaitlyn Peters led the Bishops with 12 kills, while Dieball finished with 10. Sophomore setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) had 21 assists and Osuna added 15. Rachel Peters recorded 4 blocks and senior defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had 13 digs.
