Senior forward Jaggar Brooker (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and sophomore forward Christopher Guerra (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) scored goals and the Ohio Wesleyan defense turned in a shutout as the Bishops advanced in the NCAA Division III tournament with a win over Rose-Hulman in a first-round matchup on Saturday in Chicago.
Ohio Wesleyan advances to the second round to face Chicago at 1 p.m. (Central Standard Time) on Sunday in Chicago.
Rose-Hulman pressured the Bishop goal in the opening minutes, earning a corner kick and getting a shot by Caleb Urban that senior goalkeeper Mason Taylor (Marysville) saved.
The Bishops had a couple of looks shortly afterward, with junior midfielder Landon Kuhn (Lewis Center/Olentangy) firing a shot in the seventh minute that Fighting Engineer goalkeeper John Biederstedt saved, and junior forward Franklin Rodriguez (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire (Mass.)) squeezing off a shot in the 11th minute that met a similar fate.
Guerra also got a couple of open looks at the RHIT goal, but both shots sailed high.
Ohio Wesleyan took the lead with 1:21 left in the first half after the Engineers were called for a hand ball in the penalty area. Brooker stepped to the spot, and Biederstedt appeared to get a hand on the shot, but did not catch enough of it to keep it out of the goal.
Early in the second half, the Bishops increased the margin to 2-0. A Rose-Hulman pass went off the foot of an Engineer defender, and freshman midfielder James O'Connor (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) tapped the loose ball to Guerra, who drove and fired a shot that found the back of the net.
The Bishop defense took over from there, blocking 3 Rose-Hulman shots during the next 4-plus minutes of play before holding the Engineers without a shot until the final minute of the game.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Rose-Hulman, 12-8. Taylor finished with 2 saves in the Bishop goal.
