Box Score
Otterbein 73, Ohio Wesleyan 65
Sophomore wing Jessee Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) scored 10 points and junior guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) added 6 more as Ohio Wesleyan narrowed a 13-point deficit to a single basket, but Otterbein withstood the rally and went on to a non-conference win over the Bishops on Saturday in Westerville.
Otterbein had taken a 57-44 lead on a 3-pointer by Ohio Wesleyan graduate Jack Clement midway through the second half.
Hinkle and Battle hit back-to-back jumpers before a pair of hoops by senior post Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) brought the Bishops within 61-52. A Battle 3-pointer made it 62-55 with 6:28 to play, and a Hinkle lay-in and a Battle 3-pointer brought the Bishops within 64-60 before Battle's fast-break jumper made it a 64-62 with 4:00 remaining.
It was still a 2-point game after Carter split a pair of free throws with 2:44 to go, but the Cardinals got a pair of free throws from Cam Evans before consecutive baskets by Clement stretched the lead to 8 points with 1:05 remaining, and neither team would score after that point.
The Cardinals threatened to pull away during the first half when 3-pointers from Julian Heckman and Brennan Rains opened up a 21-12 lead, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 9 points, getting back-to-back baskets from senior post Cole Metzler (Canal Winchester) and a 3-pointer and a lay-in by Battle to even the score at 21. Otterbein countered with a 12-2 run that included 3-pointers by Clement and Waits, and the Cardinals would ake a 44-32 lead at the intermission.
Battle led the Bishops with 20 points, while Carter finished with 12, shared the team lead with 5 rebounds, and added a team-best 3 assists. Junior wing David Rice (Cleveland/Parma Padua Franciscan) shared the team lead with 5 rebounds.
