Junior guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) scored the final 4 points of an 8-0 microburst that opened up a double-digit lead and helped Ohio Wesleyan to a win over Sewanee in the first round of the Morris Cregger Invitational, hosted by Roanoke College on Friday in Salem, Va.
Ohio Wesleyan advances to the tournament championship game to face host Roanoke, an 87-73 winner over Worcester State on Friday, at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Sewanee had closed to within 55-53 on a jumper by Luka Avaliani with 6:34 left in regulation time.
Sophomore guard Isaac Ward (Circleville/Logan Elm) answered with a lay-in on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, then fed junior wing David Rice (Cleveland/Parma Padua Franciscan) for a score. Hinkle followed with a 3-pointer and split a pair of free throws to extend the Bishop lead to 63-53 with 3:33 to play.
The Tigers pulled within 65-59 with a 3-point play by Code Baerlocher and a 3-pointer from Tre Corrigan sandwiched around a dunk by Rice, but that 6-point margin was as close was as Sewanee would come.
Sewanee had raced to a 17-5 lead in the opening minutes of the game, collecting 3-pointers from Corrigan, Russ Marr, and Rashaun Williams along the way.
The Bishops countered with a 14-1 run that included 3-pointers by Hinkle, senior wing Reece Mitchell (Wooster), and Rice, and it would remain a one-possession game until a Hinkle 3-pointer opened up a 40-36 Ohio Wesleyan lead early in the second half.
Hinkle and Rice shared the team lead with 15 points apiece, while Ward finished with 12 and sophomore wing Jessee Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) added 10. Senior post Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
