Sophomore guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) sank a pair of 3-pointers as Ohio Wesleyan narrowed a second-half deficit from 8 points to a single marker, but DePauw withstood the threat and held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Greencastle, Ind.
The Tigers led, 61-53, after a Sam Jacobs jumper with 3:12 left in regulation time. Hinkle sank a 3-pointer and senior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) hit another, and after Grant Niego scored for DePauw, Hinkle sank another trifecta to bring the Bishops within 63-62 with :30 remaining.
Ohio Wesleyan had to foul 3 times for DePauw to get into the bonus, and Jacobs hit the front end of the one-and-one and missed the second, with Clement clearing the rebound with the Bishops trailing by 2.
After a pair of DePauw fouls, the Bishops had the ball in the frontcourt with :09 remaining, and junior wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) had a look at a 3-pointer for the win, but his shot bounced twice off the rim and fell off.
The Bishops used a 10-0 run to open up a 29-17 lead during the first half with Hinkle connecting from downtown twice during that stretch. The Bishops still led, 40-28, after a 3-pointer by senior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) early in the second half, but DePauw assembled a 24-4 run that included 6 points from Elijah Hales and 5 each from Grant Niego and Nolan Niego to go up, 54-45, with 7:05 remaining.
Spicer led the Bishops with a career-high 24 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists. Hinkle finished with 16 and Clement added 13 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists. Carter had a team-high 10 rebounds and shared the team lead with 3 assists.
Ohio Wesleyan did not attempt a free throw in the game, equaling an NCAA Division III record shared by many teams.
