Ohio Wesleyan 3, Earlham 1
Freshman outside hitter Natalie Dieball (Cincinnati/Lakota East) and senior right-side hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) powered the Ohio Wesleyan offense to lead the Bishops to a non-conference win over Earlham on Tuesday in Richmond, Ind.
The Bishops defeated the Quakers by scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23.
Ohio Wesleyan opened the match with a 9-1 run fueled by 2 blocks and 2 kills by Murray and a pair of aces from senior defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), but Earlham's Maria Young had 3 consecutive aces during a late 5-0 burst that brought the Quakers within 22-17 before junior right-side hitter Grace Cummings (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) came through with a pair of kills to help the Bishops finish off the set. The Bishops took an 8-2 lead in the second set as Dieball had 2 kills and a block, but Earlham got 5 kills from Caylee Brandes on the way to a 13-10 lead. The Quakers still led, 21-20, before a Jasmyn Meeker kill highlighted a quick 3-0 run, and Skyler Murray closed out the set with a kill to even the match.
The third set was even at 13 when Ohio Wesleyan took the lead with a 6-1 spurt that included kills by senior outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), Murray, and Dieball along with a block from senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron). In the fourth set, Earlham rallied from a 20-17 deficit to lead, 21-20, and still held a 23-22 lead after Lily Virgili's block. The Bishops countered with a Melissa Murray kill to tie the set, then ended the match on back-to-back aces from White.
Dieball led the Bishops with 12 kills, while Murray added 11. Junior setter Olivia Osuna (Orlando, Fla./Phillips) collected 25 assists and sophomore setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) finished with 11. White had 6 aces. Solberg recorded 5 blocks and Peters chalked up 25 digs.
