Ohio Wesleyan 2, Otterbein 1
Sophomore forward Christopher Guerra (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and junior midfielder Landon Kuhn (Lewis Center/Olentangy Berlin) scored as Ohio Wesleyan built a 2-0 lead, and the Bishops went on to a non-conference win over Otterbein on Wednesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Guerra put the Bishops on the scoreboard in the 30th minute. A long pass ahead to Guerra bounced inside the Otterbein penalty area and Cardinal keeper Casey Thompson went out to track it down, but Guerra challenged the play and Thompson did not control the ball. The ball bounced back toward the top of the box, and Guerra, facing away from the Cardinal goal, took a touch before lofting a bicycle kick. The shot arched toward the Otterbein goal, glanced off the crossbar, and went in for a 1-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
Kuhn increased the margin to 2-0 early in the second half, coming up with a loose ball in the Cardinal end and blasting a 22-yard rocket into the Otterbein goal.
Otterbein closed to within 2-1 when Nick Isaac converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute, but the Bishop defense did not allow the Cardinals another shot until the final minute of play, and that was blocked before it could get to the goal.
"This was a good win," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "They are difficult to play against, but our guys were composed and did a good job in a tough situtation. James (O'Connor), Mitchell (Cosler), Gabe (O'Reilly), and Brady (West) all played well, and our back 3 were big-time tonight."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Otterbein, 12-9. Senior goalkeeper Mason Taylor (Marysville) finished with 3 saves.
