Senior right-side hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron), and freshman outside hitter Natalie Dieball (Cincinnati/Lakota East) posted double-digit performances in kills to lead Ohio Wesleyan past Oberlin in a North Coast Athletic Conference match on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Bishops defeated the Yeowomen by scores of 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 25-11.
Ohio Wesleyan held a 7-6 lead in the first set when the Bishops extended the margin with a 5-0 run that included a kill and an ace from Dieball, and a later 4-0 burst that saw kills from Solberg, freshman outside hitter Jada Colvin (Cleveland/Mayfield), and Dieball put the Bishops on the doorstep before a kill by sophomore setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) ended the set. Oberlin answered in the second set, wiping out a 4-3 deficit with 6 straight points that included 3 aces from Josie McDonald and a pair of kills by Are'Anna Gill. Murray and Dieball delivered kills to help Ohio Wesleyan pull to within 12-10, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.
Murray collected 2 kills and a block and Solberg had a pair of kill as Ohio Wesleyan turned a 12-11 deficit into a 19-14 lead, but the visitors used a late 4-0 run to pull within 24-23 before Murray came through with a set-ending kill for a 2-1 Bishop lead. Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 10-2 lead in the fourth set as Solberg had 3 kills, and the Bishops pulled away from there to close out the match.
Murray had 14 kills with 2 errors in 27 attempts for a .444 attack percentage, while Solberg's 11 kills came on 17 swings with 2 errors for a .529 percentage. Dieball added 10 kills. Bechina finished with 39 assists, Solberg and sophomore middle blocker Reagan Brake (McPherson, Kan./Inman) had 3 blocks apiece, and senior defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had 17 digs.
