Ohio Wesleyan 2, Oberlin 1

Freshman back Alex Bucher (Centerville) and senior midfielder Justin Carro (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) scored goals as Ohio Wesleyan erased a 1-0 deficit on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Sunday in Oberlin.

The Bishops had a couple chances during the early going, with senior forward Jaggar Brooker (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) firing a shot that Yeomen keeper Vince Fortuna stopped in the ninth minute.  In the 12th minute, Ohio Wesleyan was awarded a penalty kick, but Fortuna made a diving stop of Brooker's drive.  Fortuna also made saves on junior back Tristan Ruiz de Somocurcio (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory) and junior forward Christopher Guerra (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) during the first 20 minutes.

Oberlin took the lead when Xander Francoeur scored on a shot from about 20 yards out in the 28th minute, with Nathan Thompson credited with an assist on the play.

The Bishops had a flurry of shots midway through the second half, but shots by Guerra and Carro were saved by Fortuna, as was a shot by senior forward Franklin Rodriguez (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire (Mass.)) in the 60th minute.

Ohio Wesleyan got the equalizer in the 80th minute.  After the Yeomen had blocked 3 Bishop shots, Bucher controlled the loose ball on the left side, laid the ball off to senior back Brady back Brady West (Dublin/Columbus St. Charles), then took a return pass and shot across the goal mouth and into the right side with 10:54 remaining.

The Bishops took the lead just over a minute later when Carro sent the ball into the penalty area from about 35 yards out, but the ball bounced over Fortuna and into the goal with 9:34 to play.

The Ohio Wesleyan defense allowed only one shot after that point, but Francoeur's shot in the 84th minute was blocked.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 27-8.  Junior goalkeeper Sam Whitman (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) was credited with 1 save.
