Denison Sweeps Volleyball

Sophomore outside hitter Mason Campbell (Columbus/Pickerington Central) led the Ohio Wesleyan offense, but Denison swept the Bishops in a North Coast Athletic Conference match on Saturday in Granville.

The Big Red won the match by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-19.

Denison broke a 15-15 tie in the first set on a Claire Hamilton kill, then added an ace by Ryan Kotalik for an 18-15 lead.  The Big Red extended the margin to 21-16 as Maeve Perry had 2 blocks and a kill.
  Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 3 points, with senior middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) contributing a kill and a block, and the Bishops were within 24-23 after a Campbell kill, but Denison's Katy McCaffrey and Alice Kempf teamed up for a block on a Campbell attack on the next play to give the Big Red the set.

Kutilek and freshman middle blocker Jordanne Shannon (Detroit, Mich./West Bloomfield) combined on a block to tie the second set at 11, but Denison scored the next 6 points, getting another ace from Kotalik along the way.  Ohio Wesleyan pulled within 23-19 with the help of a kill from senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron), but the Big Red got kills from Kempf and Hamilton to end the set.

Solberg came through with a kill that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 7-4 lead in the third set, but the Big Red went on an 11-1 run that included 3 straight kills by Hamilton and back-to-back aces from Kempf.  Solberg had a kill and 2 blocks during a 5-0 run that brought the Bishops within 17-15, and Ohio Wesleyan was within a single point on 3 different occasions, the last at 20-19, but Denison reeled off 5 straight points to end the match, with Perry providing 2 kills and Kotalik an ace during the final run.

Campbell led the Bishops with 12 kills.  Junior setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) led the way with 28 assists.  Solberg finished with 7 blocks and sophomore defensive specialist Avery Krause (Cleveland/Holy Name) had 12 digs.
