Freshman outside hitter Megan Lantis (Wooster) had a team-high 11 kills for Ohio Wesleyan, but Oberlin swept the Bishops in a North Coast Athletic Conference match in Friday in Oberlin.
The Yeowomen defeated the Bishops by scores of 25-21, 25-15, 25-23. The win was Oberlin's first over Ohio Wesleyan since Sept. 28, 2013, snapping the Bishops' 11-match winning streak in the series.
Oberlin scored the first 8 points of the evening, collecting 3 aces from Josie Macdonald during that run. The Bishops battled back to even the score at 15 on a block by Lantis and senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron), but the Yeowomen broke a 16-16 tie with a 4-1 microburst that featured a block, a kill, and an ace from Zeynep Kaya, and Oberlin closed out the set with the help of a kill from Natalie Dufour.
The Yeowomen took a 5-1 lead in the second set with the help of a pair of Julia Hall kills and another Macdonald ace, and pulled away with a 6-0 run that included kills from Dufour and Hall along with a Jillian Jendsen ace.
In the third set, the Bishops broke a 10-10 tie with a pair of kills from Lantis and another by Solberg. Ohio Wesleyan still led, 22-21, but the Yeowomen finished the set with a 4-1 run, getting a kill and an ace from Kaya and a match-ending kill from Hall.
Lantis finished with a team-high 11 kills with only 1 error in 16 attempts. Junior setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) collected 12 assists. Senior middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led the Bishops with 3 blocks.
