Senior middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) had a team-high 8 kills for the Ohio Wesleyan women's volleyball team, but the Bishops ultimately fell to Earlham on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena in a non-conference match.
The Quakers outlasted the Bishops in 3 sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-13.
Earlham got the first point of the evening but Ohio Wesleyan kept it close immediately, earning a point back. The teams tied 10 separate times before the Bishops were able to get a 3-point lead off of kills from sophomore outside hitter Mason Campbell (Columbus/Pickerington Central) and Kutilek, as junior setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) dished out 3 assists. An 8-3 scoring run for Earlham sealed the deal to finish off the set, 25-22.
A 9-2 lead for Earlham started the second set included a pair of kills from Caylee Brandes and Liv Kyrk. Another 9-2 scoring run gave Earlham a 21-9 advantage. Kutilek added 2 kills late in the set but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback.
In the third set, the Bishops earned the first 3 points with a block by Kutilek and Bechina. Ohio Wesleyan led for most of the set until Earlham tied it up at 19, going on to finish the set with a 4-1 run, getting a kill from Sydney Bleyle.
Kutilek finished with a team-high 8 kills with only 1 error in 18 attempts. Bechina collected 17 assists. Senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) ended with 7 kills and 2 blocks.
