Box Score
Transylvania 82, Ohio Wesleyan 74

Senior guard Ryan Smudz (Delaware/Hayes), fifth-year post Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name), and junior wing Jessee Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) buried 3-pointers during an 11-2 run that gave Ohio Wesleyan its biggest lead of the game, but Transylvania rallied for a win in the first round of the Midway Classic, hosted by the University of Chicago on Saturday in Chicago.

Ohio Wesleyan will face Bates in the consolation game on Sunday, while Transylvania advances to the championship game to face Chicago, a 70-53 winner in Saturday's other first-round contest.

The Bishops trailed, 60-58, after a lay-in by Transylvania's Dakota Capps midway through the second half.  Battle answered with a lay-in to even the score, and 3-pointers by Smudz and Carter opened up a 6-point Ohio Wesleyan lead.  After Ben Godby sank a jumper to end a 3-minute scoring drought for the Pioneers, Battle connected from downtown for a 69-62 Bishop lead with 6:04 remaining in regulation time.

Transylvania pulled even over the next 2 minutes as Capps hit a pair of free throws and Colby Napier was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer and sank all 3 free throws before Capps tied the score at 69 with a fast-break lay-in.  Senior guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) split a pair of free throws to give the lead back to the Bishops at 70-69.

A Godby lay-in and a Napier 3-pointer put the Pioneers up, 74-70, with 3:15 to go, and Napier hit another long-range shot and added a pair of free throws in the final minutes to help Transylvania close out the contest.

Hinkle led the Bishops with 17 points and 6 assists.  Battle finished with 15 points, Carter scored 12 points and grabbed a team-best 4 rebounds, and junior guard Isaac Ward (Circleville/Logan Elm) and senior post Phil Wallace (Akron/Norton) added 10 points apiece.
