Mary Washington's Jordy Santana scored with 2:23 left in regulation time to lift the top-ranked Eagles over Ohio Wesleyan in a second-round game of the NCAA Division III tournament on Sunday in Fredericksburg, Va.

Mary Washington advances to the third round to face the winner of Sunday's game between Denison and Ohio Northern.  For the Battling Bishops, it marked the final game for coach Jay Martin, who is retiring as head coach after his 47th season at the Ohio Wesleyan helm with a career record of 774-169-84 (.795).

The Eagles took the lead when Joel Albritton centered the ball from the left end line and Carter Berg played it back to Santana near the top of the box, and Santana's shot found the right side of the Bishop goal.

Mary Washington enjoyed the edge in offensive play through most of the first half, but the Bishop defense was equal to the task.  Senior midfielder Justin Carro (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) cleared a ball off the line in the fourth minute, junior goalkeeper Sam Whitman (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) made stops in the eighth and 14th minutes, and in the 30th minute, UMW's Gabe Francesconi freed Berg on a breakaway, but pressure from freshman back Alex Bucher (Centerville) affected the shot, with Whitman making the save.

Senior midfielder Landon Kuhn (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) had a chance in the 43rd minute, but Eagle keeper Freddy Rogers was there for the save.

Ohio Wesleyan assembled more scoring chances during the second half.  Senior forward Franklin Rodriguez (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire (Mass.)) wound up for a one-timer in the 58th minute, but Rogers made the stop.

In the 60th minute, Rodriguez centered the ball to junior back Tristan Ruiz de Somocurcio (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory), but Ruiz de Somocurcio's header sailed wide.  Junior midfielder Mitchell Cosler (Beavercreek) had a one-time shot punched away by Rogers in the 78th minute.

Whitman preserved the scoreless tie with a save of a shot by Albritton in the 85th minute, and after the ensuing corner kick, made a diving save on a try by Sammy Amorose 24 seconds later.

Mary Washington outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 28-8.  Whitman finished with a career-high 11 saves.
