Kenyon 13, Ohio Wesleyan 12

Sophomore running back Tim Davis (Brookville) returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead, but Kenyon drove for a go-ahead field goal during the closing minutes and held on for a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Saturday in Gambier.

The win was Kenyon's first over Ohio Wesleyan since Oct. 10, 2009, when Kenyon won a 33-28 decision in Gambier, snapping a 13-game Bishop winning streak in the series.

Ohio Wesleyan took a 6-3 lead into the fourth quarter.  The Owls forced a Bishop punt midway through the period and took over on their own 25-yard line, and on the first play from scrimmage, Park Penrod connected with Charlie Taylor on a 75-yard scoring play, and Tyler Bell added the point-after for a 10-6 Kenyon lead.

That lead was short-lived, however, as Davis fielded the ensuing kickoff at the OWU 9 and returned it 91 yards for a touchdown.  The snap on the conversion was slightly high, and the Bishops were not able to attempt the kick, leaving Ohio Wesleyan ahead, 12-10, with 6:12 left in regulation time.

Kenyon marched 43 yards in 11 plays on the following possession, converting a third-and-1 with an 6-yard run by Drake Lewis and moving the chains twice more to set up a first down at the Bishop 20.  A holding penalty moved the ball back to the 30, and on fourth-and-18 from the 28, Bell booted a 45-yard field goal to give the Owls the lead with 1:24 to go.

Ohio Wesleyan took over on its own 44-yard line, and freshman quarterback Colin Pearson (Dalton) found junior wide receiver J.T. James (Hurricane, W.Va.) for 12 yards and a first down, then picked up 13 yards on his own for a first down at the Kenyon 31.  Pearson picked up 2 more yards on second down, but on fourth-and-8 from the Kenyon 29, Pearson was sacked by Andy Canonico to end the threat.

The Bishops got on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter when sophomore free safety Chris Burns (Grove City) picked off a Penrod pass and returned it 33 yards to the Kenyon 2.  A pair of carries by freshman running back Nathan Severs (Galena/Big Walnut) were stopped short of the end zone, and on third down, Pearson went over for the touchdown.  After a penalty moved the ball back to the 15-yard line, freshman wide receiver Quin Schroeder (Leipsic) had his extra-point kick blocked and the Bishop lead remained at 6-0.

Kenyon closed to within 6-3 on a 38-yard field goal by Bell, with a 34-yard gallop by Lewis to the OWU 19-yard line setting up the attempt with 4:47 left in the third period.

Severs led the Bishops with 50 yards on 19 rushes.  Pearson completed 14 of 24 passes for 100 yards.  James caught 6 passes for 39 yards.  Senior linebacker Seth Anderson (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) had a team-high 9 stops, including one for loss.
