Ohio Wesleyan 70, Wittenberg 62

Junior guard Isaac Ward (Circleville/Logan Elm) sank a jumper and a 3-pointer to finish off a late 7-1 run that gave Ohio Wesleyan breathing room, and the Bishops went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wittenberg on Saturday in Springfield.

Wittenberg had closed to within 61-60 on a lay-in by Trey Killens with 3:06 remaining, but senior guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) answered with a lay-in on the Bishops' next possession.  Wittenberg's Dawson Scott split a pair of free throws at the 2:21 mark to make it a 63-61 game, only to see Ward counter with a jumper, and after a steal by senior wing David Rice (Cleveland/Parma Padua Franciscan), it was Ward burying a 3-pointer for a 68-61 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 1:20 to go.

The Tigers went ahead on Eddie Brown's lay-in on the opening possession of the game, but Hinkle, senior post Phil Wallace (Akron/Norton), and junior wing Jessee Battle (Gahanna/Lincoln) answered with lay-ins to put the Bishops up, 6-2.  After a Killens 3-pointer evened the score at 8, fifth-year post Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) connected on a 3-pointer to put the Bishops ahead to stay.  Ohio Wesleyan would lead by as many as 8 points during the first half, and the Bishops took their biggest lead of the game when a Battle lay-in made it 39-30 early in the second half.

Wittenberg remained within striking distance, closing to within 58-56 after a 3-point play by Brown with 4:20 left only to see Ward answer with a lay-in for Ohio Wesleyan, and pulling within 61-60 after a Brown tip-in and the Killens lay-in only to see Hinkle respond with a lay-in to open the late 7-1 run for the Bishops.

Ward led the Bishops with 20 points.  Battle finished with 18 and Hinkle scored 16.  Carter had team bests of 14 rebounds and 3 assists, with the former representing a career high.
