Ohio Wesleyan 74, Oberlin 0

Fifth-year quarterback Kaden Buza (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) fired a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes and Ohio Wesleyan scored 5 touchdowns on returns in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Saturday at Selby Stadium.

The Bishop defense forced a 3-and-out on the opening possession of the game, punctuated by a sack and forced fumble by sophomore defensive end Jack Novak (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) on third down that spotted the ball on the Oberlin 19. Oberlin punter Colten Danel's kick was a low drive that bounced off an Ohio Wesleyan player at the Yeomen 20, and junior cornerback Dom Costa (Granville) picked up the loose ball, cut right, and made it to the pylon for a 24-yard touchdown.

On the Bishops' first series, Buza connected with sophomore tight end Carter Campbell (Portsmouth/Notre Dame) for 11 yards, junior wide receiver J.T. James (Hurricane, W.Va.) for 8 more, and finally with junior wide receiver C.T. Taylor (Canal Winchester/Pickerington Central) for a 17-yard scoring play.  Freshman Collin Wehner (Bellbrook/Kettering Alter) added the point-after for a 13-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Later in the opening quarter, the Bishops took over on the Oberlin 35 after a punt, and Buza led a 3-play drive to the end zone, finding freshman running back Nathan Severs (Galena/Big Walnut) for 15 yards on the opening play, then connecting with James on a 13-yard strike for the touchdown.  Wehner's PAT made it 20-0 at the 1:11 mark of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, freshman wide receiver Austin Koslow (Delaware/Hayes) took a pitch from Buza, turned the corner, and ran 20 yards up the right sideline to cap a 49-yard, 6-play drive.  Severs broke loose on a 60-yard scoring run on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and after senior safety Anthony Tressler-Hughes (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) picked off a pass to give the Bishops the ball at the Yeomen 39, it was Buza throwing to junior wide receiver Bryan Hines Jr. (Lima/Senior) on a 22-yard scoring play.  Wehner converted the PAT for a 40-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

Later in the period, Danel got off a booming punt from the Oberlin 21, with Koslow retreating and fielding the ball at the Bishop 36, making one tackler miss, and returning the ball 64 yards up the left side for a touchdown.

Ohio Wesleyan took over at midfield with 1:48 remaining in the half, and Buza moved the chains on fourth-and-3 with a 20-yard connection to sophomore running back Ja'mykle Benison (Cleveland/Garfield Heights) before picking up 23 yards to the Oberlin 1-yard line with :03 to play.  On the next play, sophomore running back Tim Davis (Brookville) went over for the score, and Wehner's conversion made it 54-0 at the intermission.

The Bishops added 3 touchdowns during the second half, all on interception returns.

Late in the third quarter, Oberlin's Nathaniel Castro intercepted a pass by freshman quarterback Jake Lowman (Delaware/Hayes) and returned it to the Bishop 13, giving the Yeomen a shot in the red zone.  On third down, freshman safety Ryan Keaton (Wadsworth) jumped in front of an Oberlin receiver and was off to the races on a 95-yard interception return.  The 95-yard return is the third-longest in the Bishop record book, trailing only a 100-yard return by senior safety Sammy Stoner (Dublin/Jerome) at Oberlin last year and a 96-yard return by Leonard Gleaves against Kenyon on Oct. 30, 2010.

Early in the fourth period, sophomore safety Bryce Johnson (Dalton) intercepted a pass and returned it 41 yards for a score, and on Oberlin's ensuing possession, freshman linebacker Khalil Buck-Barber (Newport, Ky.) stepped in front of an Oberlin receiver and was off on a 33-yard return for a score.

Buza completed 12 of 14 passes for 161 yards and 3 scores.  Koslow caught 3 passes for 17 yards, with 11 different Bishops making a reception during the contest.  Severs led all rushers with 111 yards on 7 carries.  Sophomore linebacker Lane Howard (Springboro) had a team-high 6 tackles, including half a tackle for loss.

Ohio Wesleyan totaled 169 yards on interception returns, breaking the school record set at Case on Oct. 10, 1953.  In that game, the Bishops set school records with 6 interceptions and 148 interception return yards, with Bob Hancher compiling a school-record 109 yards in interception returns.
