Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Dieball (Cincinnati/Lakota East) led the Ohio Wesleyan offense as the Bishops split a pair of matches during the second day of the CMU Quad, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday in Pittsburgh.

Carnegie Mellon defeated the Bishops by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 24-26, 25-12.  Ohio Wesleyan then rallied to beat Susquehanna, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12.

CMU led, 17-10, in the first set after a kill by Katherine Jackson.  A pair of kills from junior setter Lily Bechina (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) helped the Bishops close to within 17-16. but while Ohio Wesleyan was twice able to close to within a single point, the Bishops were not able to even the score, and the Tartans finished off the set on a kill by Laura Reichard.  The second set saw CMU break a 9-9 tie with a 6-1 run that included 3 kills by Reichard, and Carnegie Mellon went on to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Senior middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) had a kill that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 4-1 lead in the third set, but that would be the only lead of more than 2 points during the set.  With the score tied at 24, senior middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Dieball came through with back-to-back kills for the win, forcing a fourth set.  The Bishops were within 5-4 after a Dieball kill in the fourth set, but a 6-0 run that featured a kill and 2 blocks from Julianna McFarland started the Tartans on their way to the set and the match.

Dieball led the Bishops with 11 kills.  Bechina finished with 30 assists.  Kutilek recorded 5 blocks.  Junior defensive specialist Bella Guzzetta (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) had a team-high 18 digs.

Against Susquehanna, the River Hawks got an ace by Regan Kane and 2 kills from Mya Durham during a 5-0 burst that extended a 14-11 lead in the first set.  Ohio Wesleyan answered in the second set, with Dieball recording a kill and an ace to break an 18-18 tie and Bechina coming through with a kill and a block to end the set after Susquehanna had closed to within 23-22.  The third set played out in similar fashion but in Susquehanna's favor, with a Keira Roach kill and a Jessica Sack ace breaking a 21-21 tie, Dieball recording a kill to bring the Bishops within 24-23, and Emily Kowalski ending the set with a kill to give the River Hawks a 2-1 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 7-0 lead in the fourth set, thanks in part to 3 consecutive aces from sophomore outside hitter Mason Campbell (Columbus/Pickerington Central) along with a kill and a block by Bechina.  The Bishops led, 24-19, but a Kowalski kill and consecutive aces from Kane made it 24-22 before a kill by senior right-side hitter Grace Cummings (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) geve the Bishops the win and forced a fifth set.  There, Ohio Wesleyan trailed, 12-10, but got kills from Dieball and Kutilek before taking the lead on a Bechina ace.  After a River Hawk attack error, Dieball delivered a match-ending kill.

Dieball had a team-high 21 kills, while freshman outside hitter Megan Lantis (Wooster) finished with 13 and Solberg added 10 kills and shared the team lead with 4 blocks.  Bechina dished out 51 assists and shared the team lead with 4 blocks.  Guzzetta and sophomore defensive specialist Avery Krause (Cleveland/Holy Name) shared the team lead with 21 digs each.
