Betts, Browning, and Cosler Score to Lift Bishops Over Oberlin, 3-0

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University men's soccer team finished off their home schedule on Wednesday night as they hosted Oberlin. The Battling Bishops pulled ahead with two first half goals before tacking on another in the second half, en route to a 3-0 win.

OWU moves to 7-4-5 overall and 3-2-2 in the NCAC, eying the fourth and final spot in the NCAC Tournament field. Oberlin falls to 4-12-2 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.

The first 30 minutes of the game were quiet with either side snapping off a shot here and there. Then in the 32nd minute, Tristan Ruiz de Somocurcio found Ryan Betts for a longball into the back of the net and a first half lead.

The Bishops bought some insurance about ten minutes later in the 42nd minute with Carson Browning burying a ball off a corner kick thanks to assists from Sam Owusu Sarfo and Alex Bucher, making it 2-0 just before the halfway point.

The Red and Black kept it going in the second half with Mitchell Cosler scoring in the 49th minute after finding himself with the ball right in front of the goal after a deflection off a defender. Cosler cooly buried it before the keeper could react.

Ohio Wesleyan would have a few more ultimately fruitless chances before the games' end, but nonetheless the Bishops got their money's worth in the win, 3-0.

THE NUMBERS
OWU outshot Oberlin 20-13 overall, splitting their chances evenly between the two halves. When it came to shots on target, the Red and Black held an 11-2 advantage.

Ryan Betts netted his second of the season. Added to his two assists, he now has six points on the year.

Carson Browning buried the first goal of his Bishop career. He took two shots in the contest.

Mitchell Cosler scored his second goal of the season. He had two attempts, both on target.

On the assists were Tristan Ruiz de Somocurcio, Sam Owusu Sarfo, and Alex Bucher. Bucher now has three assists on the year, while Ruiz de Somocurcio and Owusu Sarfo each have one.

Others on the offensive were Owusu Sarfo (4 SH, 2 SOG), Soren Dujakovich (2 SH, 2 SOG), Carter Flynn (3 SH, 1 SOG), Jose Barreto (1 SH, 1 SOG), Luis Cañas (1 SH, 1 SOG), Ruiz de Somocurcio (1 SH), Gabe O'Reilly (1 SH), Matt Boyd (1 SH), and Aedan Costa (1 SH).

Sam Whitman (7-4-6) made the start in goal and played the first 74 minutes. Zach Hertzberg came in to finish out the game, making two saves. The pair combined for the Red and Black's fourth clean sheet of the season.

The Bishops have their season finale on Saturday as they travel to Kenyon. That game is set to kick off at 3 p.m.
