DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey team looked to get back in the win column as they hosted Kenyon for a NCAC duel on Wednesday afternoon. The Battling Bishops wasted no time, striking in the opening three minutes, leading to a dominating 4-1 win over the Owls.
OWU improves to 5-5 on the season, advancing to 4-1 in the NCAC. Kenyon drops to 3-8 overall, 3-1 in conference play.
Junior
Grace Ammon notched her sixth goal of the season as she found the back of the cage in the second minute, giving the Bishops an early lead. Ammon continued to come through for the Red and Black, as she set up
Avery Slucher in the 10th minute, who delivered, giving the Bishops a comfortable two-goal lead.
In the 17th minute,
Emma Reynolds joined the scoring effort, as she snuck behind a defender and tipped in a pass from
Mary Powers. Kenyon responded quickly, with Rigby Zentner finding the back of the cage in the 21st minute as the Owls looked to chip away at their three-goal deficit.
Following the intermission,
Morgan Leeper tacked on the final insurance goal in the 33rd minute, courtesy of an excellent pass via
Emma Wright. The Bishop defense stood firm the remainder of the contest, leaving the final scoreline 4-1.
THE NUMBERS
The Bishops outshot the Owls 15-3, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Grace Ammon scored and tacked on an assist, tallying three points on the night and bringing her season total to 15 with six goals and three assists.
Emma Reynolds and
Avery Slucher each recorded two shots and converted once, tallying two points apiece. It was the first goals of the season for both Reynolds and Slucher. They now each have three points on the year.
Freshman
Morgan Leeper buried her lone shot attempt for the first goal of her career. Her two points today brings her season total to three.
Mary Powers and
Emma Wright each registered one assist. Powers now has 16 points on the season, while Wright has ten.
OWU earned seven penalty corners compared to Kenyon's one.
Payton Mindel (5-5) got the start and played the full 60 minutes, making one save.
