Bishops Stumble at No. 11 John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University football team traveled to face 11th-ranked John Carroll on Saturday. In the end, the Battling Bishops would be outplayed 55-17.

OWU falls to 2-7 on the season, and 1-6 in the NCAC. John Carroll moves to 8-1 overall and remains perfect at 7-0 in the conference.

JCU started with 10 points in the first quarter before the Bishops responded in the second with a 42-yard field goal from Ryan Elliot, his career-long. John Carroll then extended their lead back to two touchdowns at 17-3 but this was short-lived as Bryan Hines Jr. returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards to the house, making it 17-10. Unfortunately, JCU followed with three unanswered scores before halftime, putting the Bishops at a 38-10 disadvantage at the break.

The Blue Streaks added another to start the half before the Bishops got back on the scoreboard with a two-yard touchdown run from Giovanni Rufus, making it 45-17. John Carroll then added 10 before the game's end, bringing the final result to 55-17.

THE NUMBERS
Ohio Wesleyan had 99 yards of offense. C.J. Jackson threw for 100 yards, going 14-of-34.

Mysaun Sanders led the ground game with 26 yards on five rushing attempts. Giovanni Rufus rushed for a touchdown.

Josh Hurst led the receivers with five catches for 36 yards. Austin Koslow had two catches for 20 yards.

Bryan Hines Jr. had three catches for 12 yards, but his biggest contribution came on the return team with a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Joseph Seney and Connor Stephens led OWU with career-highs of 11 tackles each. Stephens had a career-high six solo tackles with Seney picking up three solo tackles and half a sack. Grant Johnson recorded 10 tackles (one solo) with one tackle for loss and half a sack.

Ryan Elliott was 1-for-1 on field goals with a career-long of 42 yards. He was also 2-for-2 on extra points.

The Bishops return home for their final contest of the season next Saturday, hosting Oberlin at 1 p.m.
