DELAWARE, Ohio – The 19th/16th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University women's basketball team hosted Capital on Tuesday night. After a 34-34 tie at halftime, the Battling Bishops erupted in the third quarter, outscoring the Comets 22-9 to pull away for a 68-53 victory. The Red and Black controlled the paint once again, pouring in 44 of 68 points down low.
OWU improves to 6-1, while Capital drops to 8-2 on the year.
Both teams traded baskets early, with neither side building a lead greater than five points in the first quarter.
Macy Miller opened an impressive night by scoring eight of the Bishops' 17 first-quarter points, as OWU trailed by one after the first period. Both teams continued to trade punches in the second quarter, as the contest was tied four times before heading into halftime knotted at 34.
Following the break, the Bishops made key adjustments, as
Mia Guscoff sparked a 9-1 run with five points. The Red and Black built on the momentum and dominated the third quarter, holding the Comets to just nine points while scoring 22 to take a 56-43 lead into the fourth. OWU dominated the fourth quarter, shutting down Capital's comeback efforts and finishing with a 68-53 victory, marking their fifth consecutive win.
THE NUMBERS
The Bishops shot 37.3% from the field, going 28-for-75. OWU drained four triples, including two from
Mia Guscoff and one each from
Nora Johns and
Carly Lehman.
Macy Miller led the Bishop offense with her sixth double-double of the year, scoring 20 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end. She had one assist and one steal as well.
Alyssa Griner added 11 points and nine rebounds with one block and one assist.
Mia Guscoff scored eight points and dished out one assist.
Carly Lehman recorded seven points, snatched a team-high three steals, and recorded two rebounds and one assist.
Nora Johns added five points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Maddie Ebbert contributed five points, six rebounds, and one assist.
Kendall Dieringer and
Katie Neuhart recorded four points and four rebounds each. Dieringer also recorded a team-high four assists.
