DELAWARE, Ohio – Historic Gordon Field House – the longtime home of Ohio Wesleyan University indoor track & field, indoor tennis, wrestling, and numerous events throughout the year – opened its doors once again in late November with new life following an extensive interior renovation. The renovation of the facility, first opened in 1976, was funded by the generosity of the late Lloyd Ferguson '62, his wife Martha, their son William '92, as well as other members of the Ferguson family.
The renovation of the nearly 50-year-old field house involved installing new windows to increase natural light, a new lighting system and fresh paint for a more vibrant atmosphere, and a complete resurfacing of the track and tennis courts alongside multiple other equipment upgrades.
"We are immensely grateful to the Ferguson family for making the Gordon Field House renovation a reality," said OWU Athletics Director
Doug Zipp. "The combination of the new, brilliant lighting system, fresh paint, and state-of-the-art track and tennis surfaces transforms this facility into a premier, high-performance training environment. This is a game-changer that will profoundly elevate the experience and competitive excellence of every student-athlete."
"The Gordon Field House renovation has been amazing," said OWU Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Kris Boey. "We are beyond grateful for the generous gift that brought new life to this historic facility. It is now one of just a few facilities in the nation with the latest generation of Mondo Super X track surfaces and will provide state-of-the-art training and competitive opportunities for our student athletes. Our team is loving it and excited for the new season!"
"The revitalization of the Gordon Field House signifies a deep commitment not just to athletics, but to the entire community," added Zipp. "By introducing beautiful natural light and creating a truly modern, multipurpose hub with exceptional new surfaces, we are ensuring a vibrant, welcoming space where our student-athletes can be proud of the spaces in which they train and compete on a daily basis. The Gordon Field House is a lasting legacy we are all very proud of."
The Battling Bishops' track & field teams will showcase their renewed space throughout January and February with three meets: the OWU Alumni Meet on January 10th, the OWU Team Challenge on January 24th, and the OWU Open on February 13th.
Those meets will be followed by the Bishop Backers' annual Delaware Expo on February 14th. The event, part of
Winter Community Day, offers free admission to the Bishops' basketball doubleheader against Wooster at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in exchange for a canned food donation, as well as an opportunity to meet area organizations and businesses during the expo.
